Health authorities in several African countries are waging a battle against so-called “herbal” medications that contain the active ingredients acyclovir, valacyclovir and acyclovir.
Over the last five years the prevalence of these drugs has increased dramatically in many countries, and enforcement is required to track their presence. Now, health authorities are waging a campaign to curb them, with the goal of tackling the problem at the same time as other drugs are being introduced to the market.
This month, the African Commission for Human Medicines and Health Products (ACMP) and the African Medicines Agency (AMAA) in order to find out whether any drugs containing acyclovir are on the market in the country. The drugs are being sold under the brand names Zovirax and Zoviram. The products are intended for treating cold sores in adults and adolescents.
Acyclovir is an antiviral drug that treats cold sores, an infection caused by the herpes virus. It stops the growth and spread of the herpes virus.
The active ingredient in acyclovir is valacyclovir. Valacyclovir is a synthetic derivative of the naturally occurring form of acitretin. It is used to treat skin infections, including cellulitis, impetigo, and herpes zoster.

Acyclovir works by stopping the growth and spread of the herpes virus. It is a synthetic analog of the natural herpes virus, which is converted by the virus’s own cellular enzyme into acyclovir.
